January temperatures had dropped below freezing in Daytona Beach, Florida when a small, abandoned puppy was spotted fighting for her life in the waters of a river under a bridge.
Animal control officers arrived on the scene after someone apparently saw the pitbull puppy struggling in the frozen river and called Animal Control. Officers John Pearson and James Lee who found the little puppy reported, “Eyes are open. Don’t know how long she’s been outside, but she is freezing. Trying to get him warm.”
“She was cold and wet. We’re taking care of it. It’s starting to warm up a little bit.”
The officers wrapped the frozen, shivering puppy in a blanket and took turns snuggling her in their arms to share body heat.
For the last couple of weeks we've been telling you about River the Frozen Puppy. As you know her story ended happily; she is safe and sound and very loved in the home of one of our police officers. But we wanted to share the moment after River was found and then rescued by our wonderful animal control officers John Pearson and James Lee. And we really want to thank the person, whoever you are, who called and let DBPD know that River had been left to die under the Seabreeze Bridge in mid-January when the temperature had fallen to below freezing.

The pup was then sent to a local animal shelter to recuperate and was given the name “River.”
A Daytona Police Officer named Kera Cantrell regularly visited River the Frozen Puppy while she recovered. Cantrell was soon smitten and decided to adopt her. She is now safe and sound and very loved in Officer Kera’s home.

It is wonderful to see that despite her traumatic ordeal, River is now in good health and has found a forever home with someone who will love and care for her!
UPDATE ON RIVER THE FROZEN PUPPY: This is the kind of update we love at DBPD. Of course you remember River, the pit bull…
