If you’ve ever worked as a nanny or babysitter, you know the immense responsibility you undertake when accepting the job. Parents are trusting their children to your care; you are responsible for properly looking after their kids. When the parents aren’t home, you’re the adult, the role model for the children. Many who take this position take it seriously, but one nanny went above and beyond for the baby in her care.
22-year-old college student, Kiersten Miles had only been working for George and Farra Rosko for a matter of weeks when she’d make a decision that would forever make the family in her debt. Like most who serve as nannies or babysitters, Kiersten needed a job so she could continue her studies.
She contacted a friend of the Rosko’s. In no time, she started watching their three children. The young woman from Pensylvania formed a strong bond with the family’s kids. She became especially fond of their youngest daughter, Talia.
“She was nine months old when I started watching her. She’s so helpless. She can’t tell anyone what’s wrong with her. She can’t spread the word and ask for help,” Kiersten said.
The Rosko’s learned some terrible news about their littlest’s health. The 9-month-old had a rare liver disease. To survive, the baby needed a new liver, or she would die. Kiersten didn’t hesitate. She offered the little girl part of her’s.
In spite of their nanny’s generous offer, the Rosko’s explained what a huge deal this would be if she were to donate part of a vital organ. She could never serve as a donor again, even if she had a child in a similar situation to Talia. But Kiersten remained unflappable. She stood behind her decision.
“It’s such a small sacrifice when you compare it to saving a life. Some of her doctors said she possibly wouldn’t have made it past two years old. All I had to do was be in the hospital for a week and a 5-inch scar. I don’t know, it just seemed like such a small sacrifice to me,” Kiersten told WTXF.
Kiersten went through the process of applying to be Talia’s donor. She was found to be a match. Though thankful, the Rosko’s still weren’t pushing the young woman to serve as their daughter’s donor. They didn’t want her to have any regrets down the line.
Kiersten stuck to her guns and went in for a 14-hour surgery where part of her liver was removed and implanted in tiny Talia. The transplant was a success. Both Talia and Kiersten made full recoveries. Talia runs around, plays and eats like never before. If you didn’t know the medical crisis she overcame, you’d never know how close she was to death.

Kiersten is a superhero. Her unselfish act saved a little girl’s life. She could’ve continued living her life, entirely focused on herself; instead, she put the needs of a helpless, sick little girl before her own. In spite of the possible risks, she didn’t falter in her decision. Way to go, Kiersten!
