The nation was left shocked and heartbroken when news broke about the massacre that took place in Las Vegas on October 1. Fifty-nine people were killed in this senseless tragedy which took place on a day that was supposed to be filled with fun and country music.
At the Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday, country singer and co-host Carrie Underwood paid tribute to the victims of the shooting with an emotional performance of “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling.”
As the faces of the victims were displayed behind her, Underwood herself was brought to tears, even stopping at one point to compose herself before finishing the song and bringing the room to their feet.

Underwood and her co-host Brad Paisley also paid tribute to those affected by the hurricanes that ravaged Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico.
“The list goes on and on. This has been a year marked by tragedy, impacting countless lives, including so many in our country music family,” Underwood said. “So tonight, we’re going to do what families do. Come together, pray together, cry together and sing together, too.”
This dark, often cruel world is a whole lot brighter because of people like this beautiful soul right here! 😇❤️

“The way we see it, the best way to honor our fans is to play our music, loud and proud,” Paisley said. “Our music lifts people up and that’s what we’re here to do.”
